Admissions

Admissions: Your Journey to Sobriety Starts Here

Reaching out is the first and most difficult step, and judgment has no place here. One confidential phone call is all it takes to get started on a treatment plan built for you.

What happens when you call

  1. Call our admissions team

A real person answers and listens. You can share as much or as little as you are ready to, ask about our programs, and learn what treatment could look like for you. The call is confidential, and there is no obligation.

  2. We verify your insurance

With your permission, we check your insurance or Virginia Medicaid benefits for the level of care you may need. We explain what is covered, any costs you can expect, and whether your plan requires prior authorization. If you do not have insurance, we talk through payment plans.

  3. Your free assessment

A clinician meets with you to learn about your substance use, mental health, medical history, and goals. This free, confidential assessment shows which level of care is the right fit: PHP, IOP, or outpatient care. If you need medical detox or inpatient treatment first, we arrange admission to a partner facility.

  4. Your personalized plan

Your care team builds a treatment plan with you, sets your schedule, and explains what to expect in your first week. If recovery housing would help, we discuss sober living or transitional housing options too.

  5. Your first day

You arrive, meet your team, and complete a short orientation. From here, your plan guides your care, and we adjust it as you make progress.

Helpful to have ready when you call

  • The name of your insurance company and the member services phone number on the back of your card.
  • Your member ID number and group number.
  • The policy holder’s name and date of birth, if the plan is in someone else’s name.
  • Your plan type, if you know it (PPO, HMO, EPO, Medicaid, or other), and the state where the policy was issued.
  • Whether you have been to treatment before, and if so, where and when.
  • The substances you are using now and roughly how often.
  • Any medications you take, including doses, and the names of your prescribing providers.

Do not have all of it? Call anyway. We can start with what you know. (804) 552-6985

What to bring on your first day

  • A government-issued photo ID.
  • Your insurance card or Virginia Medicaid card.
  • A list of your current medications and doses, or the medications themselves in their original containers.
  • Contact information for your doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist, if you have one.
  • The name and phone number of an emergency contact.
  • Any discharge paperwork from a recent detox, hospital, or inpatient stay.
  • A notebook and any questions you want to ask your care team.

Calling on behalf of someone you love

Many calls we receive come from a parent, spouse, sibling, or friend. You are welcome to call us first. We can explain how treatment works, what the options are in Richmond and across Virginia, and how to talk with your loved one about getting help.

Your loved one will need to take part in the assessment and agree to treatment. Because treatment information is confidential, we can share details about their care with you only when they give written permission.

  • Choose a calm moment to talk, when they are not under the influence.
  • Describe what you have noticed and how it worries you, without blame.
  • Offer to make the call with them or sit beside them while they do.
  • Take care of yourself, too. Family support can make a real difference for everyone involved.

If your loved one is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, you can call or text 988 at any time.

Questions about cost come up early for most families. Read how insurance verification works and what Virginia Medicaid covers.

Admissions questions

Do I need a referral to start treatment?

No, you can call us directly. Some insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization for certain levels of care, and we check that for you when we verify your benefits.

How soon can I start?

It depends on your assessment, your insurance, and the level of care you need. We work to move you from your first call to your first day as quickly as it can be done safely, and we will give you a clear timeline during the call.

What if I need detox before I can start?

Stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids suddenly can be dangerous, so please do not try to quit these on your own before you come in. Tell us what you are using, and if medical detox is needed, we arrange admission to a partner facility and plan your step-down care with us afterward.

What if I’m not sure I’m ready?

You do not need to have everything figured out to call. Many people reach out just to ask questions and understand their options. There is no pressure and no judgment, and you decide what happens next.
