Therapy Services in Richmond, VA

Every treatment plan at Skypoint Recovery is built from evidence-based therapies chosen for you, not a one-size-fits-all program. Here is what each one is and how they work together.

Addiction is a treatable condition, and it rarely has a single cause. That is why Skypoint Recovery draws on a range of therapies to address the substance use itself, the mental health conditions that often come with it, and the practical parts of life that recovery depends on.

Therapy runs through every level of care we provide in Richmond, from our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) to our Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient Programs, and it supports people in our sober living and transitional housing as they continue treatment. Which therapies you receive, and how often, is set in your personalized treatment plan after a free, confidential assessment.

You do not need to know which therapy you need before you reach out. That is what the assessment is for. Call our admissions team, and we will help you take the first step.

Therapy services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A structured, skills-based therapy that helps you understand your triggers, challenge the thoughts that lead to use, and practice new ways through cravings.

Group Therapy

Clinician-led groups where you learn recovery skills, practice honest connection, and find out you are not the only one going through this.

Individual Therapy

Private, one-on-one sessions with a therapist to work through the history, emotions, and goals behind your recovery at your own pace.

Mental Health Treatment

Treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health conditions, integrated with your substance use care instead of handled separately.

Case Management

Practical help with the logistics of recovery: coordinating care, Medicaid, housing, legal paperwork, and job readiness, so treatment can stick.

Peer Recovery Support

Support from people with lived experience of recovery who can guide, encourage, and connect you to a recovery community that lasts beyond treatment.

What other therapies may be part of your plan?

Alongside the services above, your treatment plan may draw on these evidence-based approaches. Your care team chooses among them based on your needs and goals.

  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Skills for tolerating distress, managing intense emotions, staying present, and handling relationships, especially helpful when strong feelings drive substance use.
  • Motivational interviewing and motivational enhancement therapy: A collaborative, judgment-free way of exploring your own reasons for change, useful when part of you is still unsure.
  • Family therapy: Sessions that include the people closest to you, to rebuild trust, improve communication, and help loved ones support your recovery while caring for themselves.
  • Relapse prevention: Learning your personal warning signs, planning for high-risk situations, and building a written plan for what to do if things start to slip.
  • Life skills: Practical skills such as routines, budgeting, communication, and stress management that make daily life in recovery steadier.
  • Holistic practices: Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or art may be part of your program as ways to manage stress and reconnect with yourself alongside clinical care.

Which of these are part of your plan is decided at your assessment and adjusted as your recovery progresses.

Questions about therapy

How do I know which therapy is right for me?

You do not have to figure that out on your own. During your free, confidential assessment, our team learns about your substance use, mental health, and goals, then recommends a combination of therapies for your treatment plan. The plan changes as your needs do.

Will I receive more than one type of therapy?

Usually, yes. Most people combine individual and group therapy with other services, such as CBT skills, case management, or peer support. Different therapies address different parts of recovery, and they are designed to work together.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover therapy at Skypoint Recovery?

Skypoint Recovery accepts Virginia Medicaid and other insurance, and therapy delivered as part of a treatment program is commonly covered. Benefits vary by plan, so our admissions team can verify your coverage by phone before you start. Payment plans are available if you do not have insurance.

Can my family be involved in my therapy?

Often, yes. Family therapy may be part of your plan, and with your permission your care team can include loved ones in parts of your treatment. Substance use affects the whole family, and involving them can help everyone heal.
